What is the history of Ninoy international airport?
Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is the primary international gateway to the Philippines. It is located in the city of Pasay and Parañaque, Metro Manila, and was named after Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., a former senator and prominent opposition leader who was assassinated at the airport in 1983.
The airport was originally built in the 1930s as the Manila International Airport, and it served as the primary airport of Manila until the 1980s. In 1981, a new international terminal was opened, and the airport was renamed Ninoy Aquino International Airport in honor of the late Senator Benigno Aquino Jr.
In 1997, a new terminal, Terminal 2, was constructed to accommodate the increasing number of passengers. The new terminal was designed by the Filipino architect Leandro Locsin, and it is known for its distinct Filipino architectural style. Terminal 2 is operated by Philippine Airlines and is used for international flights.
In 2008, Terminal 3 was opened to the public. It was built to alleviate the congestion in Terminal 1 and to accommodate the increasing number of passengers. Terminal 3 is operated by the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) and is used for both international and domestic flights.
In recent years, the airport has undergone several renovations and upgrades to improve its facilities and services. Despite its improvements, however, the airport has also faced several challenges, such as congestion, delays, and security concerns.
Today, NAIA is one of the busiest airports in Southeast Asia, serving millions of passengers each year. It is also an important hub for Philippine Airlines, the country's flag carrier, as well as other major airlines in the region.
